Rameswaram is located in the Pamban Island and it is connected to the mainland of India by the pamban Rail Bridge and pamban Road Bridge. Pamban Rail Bridge has started its service since 1914, and the bridge has completed its 100th anniversary by 2014. The length of the Pamban Rail Bridge is about two kilometer and it is the first sea bridge to be constructed in India. It is also popularly called as queen of Indian bridge. The Ramanathaswamy Temple occupies major area of Rameswaram. The Ramanathaswamy Temple is dedicated to the god Shiva, and it is located at the centre of the town. The temple has the longest corridor among all Hindu temples in India, which has thousand two hundred and twelve pillars. The temple covers up the area of 15 acres of the town.
